Welcome back, First Gens! As we continue this month’s theme, Supporting First Gens, we are so excited to introduce a new organization, FirstGen Society! Our guests this week are Anthony and Emily Surratt, President and Chief Administrative Officer, respectively, of The National Leadership Society of First Generation College Students, also known as FirstGen Society. This organization is a national social organization dedicated specifically to first gen college students and alumni that provides its members with lifelong fellowship, community and friendship. In this episode, we explore the importance of supporting first- gen college students and how FirstGen Society is creating a lasting impact.
Anthony shares with us a powerful story about a childhood moment that shaped his perspective. Growing up in a lower-income household, he once asked his father why they didn’t live in a big house. His father’s response was that those houses were for “rich white folks,” which ultimately defined Anthony’s early beliefs about what was possible for him. However, attending college and seeing successful professionals who looked like him changed everything. This experience is what fueled his drive to establish FirstGen Society, an organization dedicated to providing community, resources, and mentorship for first-gen students.

Emily also shares her journey as a Korean adoptee raised by a Caucasian family, which gave her a different but equally significant perspective. She relates to the challenges of identity and belonging, two common struggles for first-gen students. Through her experiences in nonprofit work and financial services, she shares her passion for creating spaces where students feel seen and supported.
Anthony and Emily tell us about FirstGen Society, and how the organization partners with high schools and colleges to establish student-led chapters that foster leadership, social engagement, and academic success. They focus on five leadership pillars. The first is service to your school: getting involved in leadership and academic initiatives. The second is service to your chapter: building a supportive peer community. The third is service to your community: engaging in volunteer work and local outreach. The fourth is service to yourself: prioritizing self-care and mental health. And the final fifth pillar is service to family: giving back and sharing knowledge with loved ones.
Supporting First Gens
One of the most insightful discussions I had with Anthony and Emily was about shifting the narrative. They discuss how it’s not just about making students “college-ready.” Institutions should also be “first gen ready.” Many first-gen students struggle with navigating financial aid, campus resources, and networking. Anthony and Emily emphasize the importance of universities implementing better support systems and making sure students don’t feel like they’re figuring everything out alone.
If you’re a first gen student, an educator, or an ally who wants to support this movement, consider starting a chapter at your school or joining as a member. You can learn more at FirstGenSociety.org and follow them on social media at @FirstGenSociety.
