Welcome back, First Gens, and happy July! We’re diving into a new theme that sits at the heart of so many of our experiences: reclaiming your story as a First Gen.

As I talk about storytelling, I want to acknowledge every layer of it and what it means to lose our story, to reclaim it, and why, now more than ever, our stories matter.

Storytelling isn’t just about sharing what has happened to us. It’s about deciding what it means. As first gens, many of us were never taught that we had the power to define our own story. It’s time to change that. Many of us grew up in environments where survival came before self‑expression. We were taught to keep things private, not air out the dirty laundry, to be grateful, work hard, and not question anything. It’s something a lot of us as first gens have gone through and know all too well.

Those lessons may have protected us, but they also taught us to keep quiet. Somewhere along the way, many first gens lost their story, not because we didn’t have one, but because we didn’t feel safe enough to talk about it.

Reclaiming Our Stories

Losing your story can look like struggling to put your experiences into words. It can look like only seeing your life through the lens of hardship and sacrifice. And while those chapters are real and important, they are not the whole story. Our stories also hold joy, resilience, growth, healing, and becoming.

Reclaiming your story means shifting from being a passive participant in your life to becoming the author of it. It doesn’t require changing what happened. It means reclaiming your power in how you interpret those experiences and how you choose to move forward. Many of us have come to believe that we have to struggle to succeed and that our voices don’t matter. But a lot of this comes from generations of surviving, and you have the ability to change that. Reclaiming your story doesn’t mean forcing a positive spin or pretending everything is fine. It means being honest about what you lived through while also making space for your growth. You can honor your pain and still choose a future that feels more aligned.

First Gens

For many first gens, our stories are deeply connected to our families. Telling the truth about our experiences can bring up guilt or fear of being misunderstood. But honoring yourself does not mean dishonoring your family. You can appreciate the sacrifices made for you while also acknowledging the impact those experiences had on you.

And remember, reclaiming your story doesn’t mean you have to share it with others. Sometimes healing begins in private, through journaling, reflection, or therapy. Before we share our stories with others, we often need space to understand them ourselves.

I want to remind you that our stories and our voices matter. And when you’re ready, remember that you are not just a character in your story. You are the author. You get to decide how the next chapter unfolds.
