Welcome back first gens and happy August!

Last month, we discussed defying expectations and this week, we introduce a new segment called Cafecito with a First Gen. This new segment will feature conversations with first-gen authors who have written books detailing the first-gen experience. We are so excited to start this month off with a very special guest joining us! For our first episode of August, we are thrilled to chat with Alejandra Campoverdi—a remarkable advocate, producer, and former White House aide under President Obama!

Alejandra’s memoir, First Gen, dives deep into the themes of generational inheritance and the search for belonging. Beyond her impressive credentials, including producing the PBS documentary Inheritance and founding the Latinas & BRCA initiative, Alejandra’s journey is one of resilience and giving back to her community. She truly is shining a light on the collective experience of being a first gen!

During our conversation, Alejandra speaks about her own first-gen experiences, from navigating different spaces to confronting the emotional complexities of being the “first and only”. She tells us that the term first gen includes anyone who has crossed significant thresholds. It isn’t just about academic or professional achievements; it’s also about breaking emotional cycles and embracing the broader, more inclusive definition of the term. It’s about acknowledging that our experiences are valid, even if they don’t fit neatly into traditional definitions.

We also talked a bit about finding that sense of belonging. Alejandra shares how it’s often a balancing act, especially when you’re deal with different cultures and expectations. Her advice to us is to embrace the journey and give yourself some grace. She reiterates that although spaces aren’t always created for us, it does not mean that you do not belong. You are there for a reason!

Something that we often discuss on the podcast is the importance of self care. We asked Alejandra how she takes care of herself, and she stresses the importance of self-care and community. Whether it’s taking time for solitude or connecting with loved ones, these practices are so important for maintaining mental and emotional well-being. She reminds us that while the first gen journey can be tough, it’s also filled with strength and courage.

We are so excited that Alejandra was able to give us this time to talk more about her journey and experiences. For those curious to learn more about Alejandra’s story, First Gen is available in various formats. The special paperback edition even includes discussion prompts, which is perfect for sparking conversations with family and friends about the first-gen experience.

As always, we want to remind you that you are not on the journey alone and your First Gen Madrina is here to support you and root for you! Keep breaking those barriers and taking care of yourself as well. To find out more about Alejandra, visit her website https://www.alejandracampoverdi.com.
