Welcome back, First Gens! We know this may be a tough week for some following the election, so we hope you’re taking the time you need for yourself. As a reminder, your First Gen Madrina is here for you if you need someone to talk to. Let’s give ourselves grace as we navigate uncertainty.

La’Tonya Rease Miles

La'Tonya Rease Miles The First Gen Madrina Culture as a First Gen

Last week, we started talking about this month’s theme, Culture as a First Gen. This week, we welcome Dr. La’Tonya (LT) Rease Miles, a powerhouse in first-generation education and advocacy, to discuss this month’s theme. As a first-gen college graduate herself, LT has been a force in higher education. She’s led groundbreaking programs for first-gen students at UCLA and Loyola Marymount University, and now serves as a Partnership Development Representative at ReUp Education, where she advises institutions on the first-gen experience. In addition to her many leadership roles, LT is also a co-founder of My Tribe Media, championing initiatives that uplift non-traditional adult learners and advance the visibility of first-gen students.

LT’s Ph.D. in American literature from UCLA has also helped her make significant scholarly contributions, including exploring the hidden curriculum in higher education, analyzing first-gen narratives, and examining the representation of first-gen students in popular culture. Her latest work highlights the powerful relationships between campus service workers and first-gen students, and she’s the co-editor of an upcoming book about the Black first-gen experience.

Culture as a First Gen

In this episode, LT also talks about the power of seeing ourselves represented in pop culture and how first gen characters, like Peter Parker and Miles Morales’s Spider-Man, can become symbols of resilience and inspiration for students going through something new that their families may not be familiar with. She does explain that while Peter isn’t explicitly labeled as “first gen,” his working-class background and journey through college reflect the core struggles many first gens face: balancing family expectations, adapting to new environments, and finding their voice. Characters like these give us something we can relate to and resonate with. They make us feel like we’re not alone in what we’re going through and are more important than we might realize.

LT also shares with us her journey of being a first-gen professional and what her go-to self-care strategies are, like making themed playlists, finding community at the gym, and connecting with supportive friends. She shares some words of wisdom with us: “Be yourself, and trust that yourself is enough.” Beyond her advocacy, LT has also co-founded quite a few online communities, including a national Facebook group dedicated to first gens. For listeners who want to support her work, follow her at @firstgenandjuice on Instagram and @drltreasemiles, and stay tuned for her upcoming books on first gen and Black first-gen experiences in pop culture.
