First Generation Programming Services

Welcome back, first gens! We have made it to the last full week of April, which means it’s the final episode of this month’s theme: Finance as a First Gen. This week, we welcome Jeffrey Martinez, the Executive Vice President and Head of Branch Banking at PNC Bank. Jeff also served our country in the US Army National Guard for nine years and was deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Now, Jeff is a father who supports several nonprofit organizations providing support for fellow first gens.

Jeffrey Martinez

Jeff The First Gen Madrina
Jeff shares with us a little bit about his story and how he got to where he is today. Born and raised in Hudson County, New Jersey, by his Cuban father and Colombian mother, Jeff’s parents pushed him to get good grades and to pursue an education. As first gens, we know the push for education and getting good grades is something we are all too familiar with, but it wasn’t always easy, especially due to a lack of resources.
While pursuing his education as he promised his parents, Jeff found the National Guard. This was a big change that led him to where he is today. It pushed him out of his comfort zone and started a change he didn’t know he needed. Through this, Jeff realized that self-improvement often requires embracing discomfort and embracing change. He shares the impact of finding fulfilling work that aligns with passions and values, stressing how this can provide emotional relief and deep satisfaction. Jeff also realized that joining the National Guard would be his ticket to more financial opportunities.

Finance as a First Gen

If you know The First Gen Madrina Podcast, you know that self-care is a constant theme of our podcast. Jeff does so much for himself, his family, and others, so how does he keep his mental health top of mind? Jeff shares with us the importance of physical and emotional well-being, advocating for activities that promote relaxation and rejuvenation. He talks about personal experiences of finding solace in hobbies like diving, emphasizing the importance of setting aside time for himself to keep himself strong.
Jeff also stresses how important it is to surround ourselves with supportive friends and family who encourage personal growth and offer a sense of belonging. He talks about how much the impact of listening and empathy in building meaningful connections can make a difference and states that “no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.”
When we asked Jeff for advice for fellow first gens, he shared with us two guiding principles: the importance of taking action over just words and the necessity of prioritizing empathy and understanding in all interactions. He stresses the power of empathy in creating real connections and the impact of following through on commitments. You can follow Jeffrey on his LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/in/jeffrey-martinez-pnc.
