Welcome back, First Gens! This week, we’re welcoming a brand-new guest to continue our conversation on this month’s theme, Money Stories as First Gens. In this episode, we dive into this conversation with money mindset and business coach Debbie O’Hara. In our conversation, we learn how to unpack our early money experiences and understand how they shape the way we navigate adulthood.

As a first-gen Cuban American, Debbie’s money story began with instability, scarcity, and unspoken fear. Growing up, money was the source of constant tension, rent struggles and the familiar phrase, “we can’t afford it.” Like many first gens, Debbie did not receive financial education from her family. Because of this, those early experiences became beliefs that followed her into adulthood.

During the episode, Debbie vulnerably shares her story about her first marriage and how it led her into debt. She shares how money and mental health are deeply connected although stigmatized in the Latinx community.

Eventually, Debbie’s turning point came when she was faced with nearly $48,000 of debt after surviving an abusive marriage. With no blueprint and very little time, Debbie taught herself everything she could about money. Two years later, she was able to pay off her last credit card, which was an emotional milestone that changed everything.

Money Stories

The story of Debbie’s journey reminds us that money is a tool. Unfortunately, this tool can be used to control and harm, but it can also be used to create safety, options, and freedom. By the end of the episode, we learn that the shift doesn’t start with restriction or perfection. It starts with awareness. Also, financial healing includes looking at the numbers and releasing guilt around past decisions. We all have the potential to reach this goal!

Overall, this episode is a reminder that we can heal our money wounds. With the right support, representation, and mindset shifts, it is possible to rewrite your money story. Financial freedom doesn’t mean abandoning your culture or joy. Thankfully, it means building a life that honors where you come from while giving you room to thrive.  Remember that your Madrina is always here to help and guide you along the way!
