Happy May, First Gens! This week Sara, The First Gen Madrina, will be getting personal while sharing a bit about her mental health story. This month’s theme on the podcast is catered to bringing awareness for Mental Health Awareness Month.

For our theme, Mental Health as a First Gen, Sara kicks off the season by sharing more about her journey. As a licensed clinical social worker, Sara has dedicated herself to educating and supporting others through their mental health challenges while drawing from both professional expertise and personal experience. Growing up, mental health wasn’t something that was spoken about, especially in a Hispanic household. In Sara’s life, it wasn’t something she thought much about until the passing of her Tia Caridad the summer that she graduated high school. Tia Caridad was a big part of Sara’s life, filling the role of a third grandmother. Her passing happened just before Sara embarked on her journey to college as a first-generation student. Struggling to cope with grief while navigating the brand-new territory of college that she was not fully prepared for, Sara ended up experiencing her first panic attack that Fall.

Sara credits her mother’s love and support throughout her journey, as she helped her understand what was going on and connected her to therapy. Through therapy, Sara found support and guidance, laying the foundation for her ongoing journey toward mental wellness. Unfortunately, for many first gens, accessing mental health resources remains a challenge. There is often a stigma that surrounds mental health, which can make it extremely different when looking for support. Beyond this, there are also many financial barriers that keep first gens from trying to find help they need.

Like Cinderella searching for the perfect fit, finding the right therapist requires patience and persistence, but the journey is worth it. Sara also understands that therapy might not be for everyone, or they might not be ready for it.  She is committed to providing guidance and resources to empower first-gen students and professionals on their mental health journey. If you’re struggling with your mental health, remember that you’re not alone. Reach out to your insurance provider, explore low-cost clinics, or utilize online resources like Psychology Today if you are interested in therapy. Remember, your mental health matters, you deserve support every step of the way. Follow Sara along her journey on https://www.instagram.com/thefirstgenmadrina/.

As a disclaimer, although Sara is a social worker, these episodes are meant to educate and bring awareness to mental health challenges that we may experience. For additional support, please reach out to the National Alliance on Mental Illness at 1-800-950-6264. If this is an emergency, please call 911. Please know that there is help out there for you, and you do not have to navigate this alone.
