Welcome back, First Gens! As we go through the month of June, we are continuing our discussion on Pride. That’s why we’re welcoming my dear friend Eduardo Placer back to The First Gen Madrina Podcast.
Eduardo Placer
A dynamic keynote speaker, charismatic event, MC and global facilitator, he is a former professional actor who has a rare ability to help people find common ground through compelling narratives that inspire and unite. He is the founder of Fearless Communicators, a diverse, inclusive public speaking coaching company that works with emerging and accomplished thought leaders on what they say and how they say it. His clients range from presidential candidates and UN diplomats to startup founders, social activists and industry leaders. Drawing from his experiences in the US as a proud Cuban American and member of the LGBTQ+ community, Eddy shares his message of empowerment and belonging with audiences around the world. He is committed to creating inclusive organizations where everyone feels comfortable bringing their authentic selves to work.
Eddy shares his journey of growing up in Miami, immersed in Cuban culture, dancing between languages, rhythms, and identities. But within all of this culture was an unspoken tension. How do you express pride in your roots while navigating the reality of being gay in a machista culture? His passion for dance, musical theater, and self-expression clashed with the gender norms expected of him, leaving him wrestling with shame long before he had the language to name it.
Pride as a First Gen
And yet, Eddy’s message is clear: pride is the antidote to shame. As we honor Pride Month, Eddy challenges us to think bigger. What does it mean to be proud? Not just of where we come from, but of who we are, fully and unapologetically? And how can we, as first gens, hold multiple truths at once? Eddy reminds us that embracing our stories, especially the parts that have been marginalized or misunderstood, is an act of healing.
Eddy and I also talk about the importance of community, rest, and the power of reframing our narratives. He shares a life-changing moment where he found himself stranded in a snowstorm, using the mantra: “In this moment, I am safe. I am well. I am loved.” That reflection led us to a truth so many of us need: we are not just what happens to us, we are the storytellers of our own lives.
This conversation is for anyone who’s ever been told they’re “too much” or “not enough.” For those reclaiming their voice, dancing with their heritage, and daring to live joyfully despite the noise. Eddy leaves us with a beautiful reminder: nourish yourself, love fervently, and allow space for revolutionary fun.
