Welcome back, First Gens! It’s time for a new theme here on The First Gen Madrina podcast: Redefining Leadership as a First Gen! When we think of leadership, many of us picture the traditional images we grew up with: someone at the top, confident, maybe even larger than life. But as first gens, we often weren’t told we could be leaders. Instead, the messages we got sounded more like: stay humble, keep your head down, don’t make too much noise. And little by little, those messages made us believe leadership was for “other” people, for those who looked different, spoke differently, or came from backgrounds unlike ours.
But here’s the truth: leadership isn’t about titles, power, or being the loudest in the room. It’s about impact. It’s about opening doors, telling our stories, uplifting our communities, and making space for others to thrive. Some of the most powerful leaders I know aren’t CEOs or politicians. They’re madrinas, padrinos, teachers, social workers, small business owners, and mentors who show up for us every single day.
Redefining Leadership as a First Gen
As first gens, leadership can feel heavy. We carry cultural expectations, family sacrifices, and the constant pressure to succeed. But real leadership doesn’t mean doing it all alone. It means collaborating, co-creating, and leading with compassion. It also means making mental health a priority. We tend to forget more often than not that we can’t pour from an empty cup. Setting boundaries, seeking therapy, or simply resting isn’t selfish. This is something I talk about all too often. Setting boundaries and finding your community is so important, and I will not let you forget that!
And let’s not forget: leadership doesn’t always mean being at the very top. It can be as simple as advocating for yourself at work, mentoring a younger peer, or speaking up in your community. Each small act plants the seeds of change. When you show up for yourself, you give others permission to do the same, creating a ripple effect that extends far beyond you.
I also leave you with this reflection: What kind of leader do you want to be if you let go of who the world told you to become? Your lived experience is your blueprint. Your authenticity is your superpower.
Remember, being first gen means we may be the first, but we are never the last. Lead in your own way, take up space, and trust that you are more ready than you think.
