Welcome back! As first gens, we are often figuring things out as we go. We were never given a roadmap; we just kind of had to teach ourselves how to navigate life. That’s why this month our theme is Resources as a First Gen. I didn’t know about many of the resources available to me when I was navigating school and trying to figure out my path, which is why I know just how important this is.
As we continue to discuss this month’s theme, we welcome Scarlett Luis, a product leader and passionate advocate for first-generation college students and professionals. As a first gen graduate herself, Scarlett understands how resource gaps and hidden curriculum can make the journey challenging, but also extremely rewarding.
Scarlett Luis
Scarlett shares with us how her path started with curiosity and perseverance, traits instilled by her parents. She learned early on to look for solutions, from joining an engineering magnet program to navigating out of state college life. Even then she came across roadblocks many us first gen students may be familiar with: missed tutoring sign ups, unknown campus resources, and the feeling of being late to the game. If you have ever felt this way, Scarlett advises us to stay curious, ask questions, and make time to explore your campus. Don’t let yourself be left out.
One of Scarlett’s go-to college resources was Khan Academy, a free online learning platform that helped her get through those tough engineering courses. She also found productivity tools like the Pomodoro technique, which helps break study sessions into focused intervals. For first gen students and professionals, she talks about the importance of asking for help, whether from campus learning centers, peers, or career mentors.
Resources as a First Gen
Scarlett also notes that being first gen doesn’t end with graduation. Many first gen professionals experience imposter syndrome and uncertainty about workplace benefits or career advancement. One powerful resource she highlights is employee assistance programs (EAP), which often provide free short term counseling and support services, something she herself learned about later in her career.
Most importantly, Scarlett reminds us that success begins with your mindset. She encourages us to stay curious, practice self-awareness, and take action, even when progress feels slow. And when you reach milestones, don’t hold back, celebrate them! I suggest keeping a “win folder.” This can be a great way to show off your skills when it’s time to advocate for promotions or salary increases.
Whether you’re starting college, entering your first job, or exploring a new career path, remember: you are not alone. Resources exist, and your Madrina is always here to help you along the way!
