Welcome back, first gens! As we begin a new month, we also begin a new theme which is…. ADHD as a First Gen. In this episode, I open up about my journey with ADHD and learning to deal with it as an adult and as a first gen.
Although I am a social worker with years of experience supporting others, I didn’t recognize the signs within myself right away. It wasn’t until I became a full-time entrepreneur that I began to realize that something wasn’t quite right. Without the structure of a regular work schedule, familiar patterns became impossible to ignore. There was constant mental jumping, unfinished tasks, overstimulation, and the feeling of having “too many tabs open”.
For years I thought this was just my anxiety. I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder almost 15 years ago, and it explained the overthinking, the constant worrying, and the pressure to keep up. However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that the anxiety was a coping mechanism. It was a response to undiagnosed ADHD in a world that wasn’t built for the way my brain works. When I finally received the diagnosis of ADHD, I was relieved. I finally had an answer.
ADHD as a First Gen
For the first time, I could make sense of some of those experiences that I never had words for. The diagnosis didn’t make me feel broken; it helped me feel understood. Additionally, navigating ADHD as a first gen also comes with cultural layers. In many Latinx households, mental health is still stigmatized, misunderstood, or minimized. Because of this, I share that I have chosen to be intentional about who I speak to about my diagnosis. I would rather prioritize my emotional safety and that is an act of healing.
Moving forward, I am still learning how ADHD and anxiety play a role in my life. I am exploring holistic approaches and moving at a pace that feels grounded and aligned. This journey isn’t about fixing myself. It is about understanding myself.
If any part of my story sounds familiar to you, know this: you’re not lazy, broken, or behind. Your brain just works differently, and that difference deserves compassion. My diagnosis didn’t limit me. It unlocked clarity, self-trust, and a new way of honoring my inner child. Remember, you are not alone. Your story is still unfolding, and you always have a Madrina in your corner.
The First Gen Madrina
