Welcome back, First Gens! As we begin the month of May, so welcome a new theme: The Good Social Worker. This may feel a little different than we are used to, but it’s important to discuss, especially as a fellow social worker.

We know that the “good” social worker is something that we are taught to work towards. Unfortunately, we are taught to be selfless, dependable and always willing to go the extra mile. Were you ever taught to answer emails after hours, hold everything together without breaking, and put others before you? For many, especially those who are first gens, this pressure is intensified. Consequently, there’s an unspoken expectation to prove yourself, to give more, and to succeed. This pressure is felt as we often think about our family and community first. Over time, that pressure becomes a double burden.

There is a huge risk when subscribing to this mentality. When we try to be this “perfect” social worker, we begin to ignore our own needs. We may also feel that rest is undeserved until we get it all done. The hard truth is that we may often forget about ourselves, which can often turn into burnout. Sadly, what may have started as dedication, can quickly change because the system was never designed to support us.

The Good Social Worker

The Good Social Worker The First Gen Madrina

In this episode, I push social workers to question where this definition of the “good” social worker even came from. Is it just part of the mission of social work, or is it from some set of expectations that prioritize productivity over taking care of ourselves? When it comes down to it, social work was never meant to be about quiet compliance or sacrificing your well-being.

Here is the truth. Social work calls for challenging harmful systems, not conforming to them. At the same time, this also includes advocating for yourself. Shifting your perspective in this way helps you to become the best version of yourself that you can be. It is important that you strive for version of yourself where you can set boundaries and not see it as a weakness. Start to see it as the way to be the best version of yourself that you can be. Because the truth is simple: a burnt-out social worker cannot create meaningful change. However, a supported, grounded, and empowered one can.

I want you to think about why you chose this path for yourself and why you chose to become a social worker. Let’s redefine what it means to be a “good” social worker together!
