First Generation Programming Services

Happy February, First Gens! Your Madrina is back, and we are starting off the month with two very special guests, Audrey Fisch and Ashley Delgado. Today, we will learn not only a little bit about their journeys and navigating life as a first gen, but also about Audrey’s organization, More than Bootstraps. More Than Bootstraps builds community amongst first-generation college students to help overcome the unique challenges they face and help them navigate their academic careers to success.

More Than Bootstraps

Audrey’s own journey, while not a typical first-gen experience, is deeply intertwined with the essence of the program. Raised by first-gen parents that did have access to education and supported her through her own higher education journey, Audrey understands the importance of support in the pursuit of education. Throughout her career as an English Professor a New Jersey City University, she has witnessed a decline in resources available to students, with funding cuts impacting their ability to access essential support systems. This is what led her to creating More than Bootstraps.

Ashley Delgado

Ashley Delgado The First Gen Madrina

We also speak with Ashley Delgado, a first-gen student who is a perfect example of what MTB can do for all first gen students. Growing up in Passaic, NJ with a single mother from Mexico, Ashley faced the added challenge of being a voice for her mother and a second mother to her younger brothers. Due to her mother’s language barrier and need to work to support the family, Ashley was pushed to be successful in school, but was also forced to navigate it all on her own. Despite these obstacles, education became her pathway to success, a journey marked by the invaluable support of mentors within the MTB program.

Ashley’s story highlights the difference More Than Bootstraps makes in the lives of students. The program not only provides resources directly to students but also equips them to support others on their educational journey. As a mentor, Ashley shares her experiences and knowledge, helping her mentees navigate the complexities of higher education, just like her own mentor did for her just a few years ago. Both Audrey and Ashley emphasize the importance of not comparing oneself to others and the pressure that often accompanies being a first-gen student. They stress the value of building a supportive network and the ability to ask for help, acknowledging that navigating this path alone can be overwhelming.

More Than Bootstraps  addresses academic challenges but also tackles the stigma around mental health, particularly for Hispanics, providing students with the tools to start conversations at home. More Than Bootstraps is a beacon of support, offering guidance, resources, and a sense of community to first-gen students. The program’s impact goes beyond academic success, fostering a supportive environment that empowers students to overcome obstacles and build a foundation for a brighter future.
